HackerOS primer
Jan. 1, 2018

Thank you for choose HackerOS for your 65c02 computer. HackerOS gives you the power to easily manage files and make network connections to other machines. In this primer, we will go through the basics of HackerOS and how to get up and running as quickly as possible. This primer will be updated from time to time, so please check back for any future updates.

Hacker's Edge BootROM v0.1

HackerKernel v0.4 $Rev: 299 $
HackerFileIO v0.1 $Rev: 293 $

HackerShell v0.3 $Rev: 293 $

This is what you should see after booting up HackerOS, it will first boot from the code within the ROM chip, which will in turn load a bootloader program called BOOT.SYS from your disk. The bootloader will then look for and load KERNEL.SYS, and execute it. From here the HackerKernel takes over and starts up HackerOS.

Troubleshooting guide

It's very possible for you to break HackerOS, but fear not, a reinstall is all you need to fix everything right up. Be warned however, that if you take the reinstall route, all files will be removed from the file system, including any files you may have created yourself.

Hacker's Edge BootROM v0.1
Loading BOOT.SYS...
Loading KERNEL.SYS...
HackerKernel v0.4 $Rev: 299 $
HackerFileIO v0.1 $Rev: 293 $
FILEIO.SYS driver loaded.
NETDRV.SYS failed to load.
HackerShell v0.3 $Rev: 293 $
$ █

The above error may occur if your NETDRV.SYS is corrupted or removed. Thankfully this isn't the end of the world as your machine is still functioning mostly fine, just without a connection to the outside world. To repair this problem, locate your HackerOS media and copy the driver file over to your machine and reboot.

Hacker's Edge BootROM v0.1
Loading BOOT.SYS...
Loading KERNEL.SYS...
HackerKernel v0.4 $Rev: 299 $
HackerFileIO v0.1 $Rev: 293 $
FILEIO.SYS driver loaded.
NETDRV.SYS failed to load.
Failed to load SHELL.SYS!
█

This error is a bit more troubling as now you cannot access your machine from either the network or the console. Hopefully you made backups of your important files, as you will need to reinstall HackerOS from scratch.

Hacker's Edge BootROM v0.1
Loading BOOT.SYS...
Boot Error, cannot load KERNEL.SYS!
Press Enter to halt...█

Here's another nasty error, this can occur if your HackerKernel is missing for whatever reason. Again, this will require a reinstall to resolve.

Boot Error, cannot load BOOT.SYS!
Press Enter to halt...█

Do these errors just keep getting worse, or is it just me? And if you haven't guessed it already, this one will also require a reinstall.
