I have a textbook called "The Elements of Computing Systems". With it should be a Java-based hardware simulation of incredible complexity, with the ability to build a simulated computer from logic gates and write an operating system for it. (It was a nice course.) I believe source code was included. If you or I get a copy of this program, which I believe contains source code, a Python port could be used to build entirely new processor architectures, ushering the game into a new age of realism! Of course, this would be something for the far future, after all current tasks have been completed, and players would have the responsibility of writing software for these new processors. Naturally this is impossible with current hardware, but with faster processors coming out all the time, who knows, it might be possible in a few years.
Did I mention I'm a bit of an optimistic idealist?
